I encountered this burial ground in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina this past weekend. It was an interesting experience in light of recent events. The marker was old and faded and the presence of the flag next to it didn’t offend me the way it has at our state house. It didn’t shout an outdated ideology, but marked the passing of a singular individual, whose misguided fight was lost and, whose time upon the earth was long ago. In this quiet place, the impartial grace that the universe bestows on us all came to mind through the scripture, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain to fall on the just and the unjust.” May the past rest in peace.
