The title is a bit deceiving. The photograph was not taken in Malawi in 1974. It was taken somewhere in Western North Carolina in 2008. This was a long ago abandoned (perhaps in 1974) produce market. The box to the left of the Coca-Cola® ghost sign says, “Produce of Malawi 1974.” Again, the theme of reclamation appears with the Coke® branding. If you look closely, in the upper left, there is a faded drink Coke sign above the tin walkway roof. Very interesting and cool image.
Thanks, Elvis. It’s very hard to find ghost signs anymore. I also like the slant of the vines growing in the same direction as the slant of the letters.
